Create a membership discount code

Create a membership discount code to give customers money off one or more membership subscriptions.  You can choose whether the discount applies to the first payment, a set number of months, or every payment for as long as the membership continues.

Before you start, memberships and discount code apps  must be switched on for your outlet. If you can't see the Memberships tab when you follow the steps below, contact us and we'll check this for you.

Create your code

1. Go to Products -> Discount codes

2. Select the Memberships tab

3. Select Issue membership code

4. Under Code, enter your own code or use the suggested code

5. Under Expires after, choose how long the code can be used for

6. Choose whether the discount is a percentage or fixed amount (it cannot be both)

7. Choose how long the discount should last

8. Select the membership types that the code can be used on

9. If needed, enter a Maximum redemptions limit (Use Maximum redemptions if you only want a certain number of customers to use the code. For example, entering 50 means the code can be used by up to 50 customers. Leave this blank for unlimited redemptions. Once the limit is reached, the code stops working for new customers.)

10. Select 'Issue discount code' 

Choosing how long the discount lasts

You can choose different options for how long the discount will apply to the membership, dependant on what you want to achieve for your business. 

• First payment only: The discount is applied to the customer's first membership payment and then stops

• A set number of months: The discount applies to payments taken during the period you choose. You can choose between 1 and 36 months. A set number of months means exactly that — months, not payments. The number of payments discounted depends on how often the membership bills 

• Every payment:  The discount continues for every payment for as long as the membership remains active

What happens when a customer uses the code?

The customer enters the code in their basket, in the same place they would enter a voucher. Once the code is accepted, they'll see:

• the original membership price crossed out

• the discounted price

• confirmation that the code has been applied

• how long the discount lasts

• what they'll pay when the discount ends

• a note explaining that the sign-up fee isn't discounted, if there is one

What's next?

Once you've issued your code, you can view its redemptions and the amount you've given away from the Memberships tab. 

Helpful Tips: 

• Membership discount codes are different from booking discount codes. Membership codes discount recurring membership payments, while booking codes discount the total of a booking basket
• Don't forget, a discount code cannot be edited once it's live. So double check the information before you hit save! If you accidentally create a discount code with the incorrect information, disable it and create a new one
• If your membership includes a sign-up fee, this would still be payable in full, the discount would only apply to the recurring membership price 
• A customer can only use one membership discount code per membership 
• Codes aren't case sensitive, so customers can enter them in upper or lower case. We show codes in capitals to make them easier to read
• An expiry date is useful for seasonal or launch promotions because you don't need to remember to switch the code off when the promotion ends. Once a code expires, or reaches it's max redemptions, then it'll stop being useable automatically, customers will no longer be able to check out using the discount code 
• If you turn off a discount code, or it expires, then don't worry - it won't remove existing discounts. If a customer has already joined using the code, they'll keep their discount according to its original terms
