Change a member's price plan or membership

Learn how to move a member onto a different price plan or membership, such as upgrading a junior member to a family membership, and what happens to their payments.

As your members' needs change, you can move them onto a different price plan or a different membership without interrupting their membership. For example, you can upgrade a junior member to a family membership when a parent wants to join, or move an adult onto a different plan within the same membership.

You can make the change yourself from your Dashboard, and eola takes care of the payment.

Find the member's subscription

There are two ways to open a member's subscription:

  • From search: Search for the customer by name or email, open their customer profile and click the membership under Subscriptions
  • From your memberships: Go to Products -> Memberships, select the membership, click 'View' on the member's current price plan and click the member's name

Change the price plan or membership

  1. Open the member's subscription
  2. Click Edit in the top-right corner
  3. Under 'Transfer this subscription to another membership plan', choose the new plan from the dropdown. This lists the price plans across all of your memberships, so you can move a member within the same membership or onto a different one
  4. Click Change subscription

You can see who is included on the membership in the Members section of the subscription.

If the member is joining someone else's membership

Sometimes a member doesn't need a different plan at all. For example, a parent with their own membership may want to join their partner's family membership, where their partner is the account owner. In this case, there's no need to change their subscription:

  1. Cancel the member's own membership using 'Cancel now (with refund)', if your membership policy allows a refund. This refunds the unused part of their current membership
  2. Ask the account owner of the other membership to add them as a named member from their eola account

Our guides to cancelling a membership and updating membership details walk through each step.

What happens to payments

  • Upgrading: When the new plan costs more, eola charges the member the difference straight away and the new price applies from then on. If that payment fails, the membership shows as past due and becomes active again once it's paid
  • Downgrading: When the new plan costs less, the lower price applies from the member's next payment. If they've already paid more than the new plan costs, you can arrange a partial refund with them

Good to know

  • You can move members between recurring memberships. If you'd like to move a member onto or off a fixed-length membership, contact our team at help@eola.co and we'll be happy to help
  • To offer a member a reduced price, use a membership discount code

Helpful tips:

  • Check the member's card details are up to date before upgrading, so the payment goes through first time
  • Let the member know what they'll pay and when
  • After moving someone onto a family membership, check the Members section to make sure everyone who should be covered is listed
  • For a full refund of a membership, contact help@eola.co
